Replacing your guitar strings is not that hard to do once you learn how. You should also not expect to do it perfectly the first time you try. Like anything in life, changing your guitar strings takes practice. Let me give you a few tips on how to effectively change your guitar strings.
When replacing your strings, remember to replace one at a time instead of all of them at once. This makes it easier on the neck of your guitar; otherwise it could end up with distortion and permanent damage. When you loosen the strings, unwind it until the tension is completely released. Then you can unthread the string from the Capstan in the headstock. Lastly, untie it from the bridge and discard it.
You can then take the new string and thread it through the hole in the bridge. Once in, you must tie it so that it won’t come loose or slip when under tension. After this is completed, leave about 10 cm extra of string beyond the bridge, so that you can wind it 3 times, making it more secure. Next, thread the string through the hole in the Capstan in the Headstock. Keep winding the slack until it reaches its proper tension.
You should never tune the strings more than a tone above their regular pitch when you change them. If you do, it could make them break. If you play an acoustic guitar, you should never put steel strings on it. An acoustic guitar is not built to take such an exertion and so can easily damage it.
If you have an electric tuner, it doesn’t really matter which string you start with. If you are using a tuning fork, it may be easier to start with the first E treble string. Use your tuning fork to get the A note on the 5th fret and then go from there.
