Installing hardwood flooring is a high end investment that should be properly researched before purchasing. There are two types of this flooring available, the unfinished and finished varieties. If you are looking for a custom wood stain that you cannot find in pre made wood, then you can stain unfinished wood with a stain that you buy separately. However, the wood must be finished at your home which will result in a less luminous and appealing coat.
Unfinished varieties lack the luster and long term quality of prefinished hardwood. At the factory, several coats of finish are applied in the most professional way possible. These coating consist of chemicals called aluminum oxide and polyurethane. The difference between doing this at home and at the factory is the application. Heat and pressure are applied using technologies that are not practical for use in a home environment. The wood planks can be placed into the machines and treated beforehand.
You will find that manufacturers are also reluctant in providing long warranties for unfinished flooring. This is because of the many factors in private installation that can go wrong. Inexperienced homeowners and installers often use improper techniques and tools which end up damaging the woods. With prefinished wood, you will get a better warranty period because there are a lot fewer steps involved with installation. The manufacturers are confident that their wood preparation will last many years.
Chemicals used in the installation of unfinished wood can give of VOC’s which are harmful to humans and animals. Although it is in small quantities, it can be damaging over time. Be sure to request that the chemicals you use contain no VOC’s. While you may not be able to completely eliminate it, you can reduce it by requesting this.
Eventually your floor will need to be refinished. The constant wear of shoes and furniture on the wood can result in scratches and the removal of finish. Don’t worry though, as the wood can be refinished to its original sheen. Prefinished woods are a lot easier to refinish than unfinished because most of the work has been done for you at the factory.
Unfinished hardwood flooring has its advantages if you need a custom wood or stain.
